WHY MOVING HOME IS SO EMOTIONAL – AND WHY THE RIGHT ESTATE AGENT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE
There is one part of being an estate agent that rarely gets talked about. It isn't valuations, photography, negotiations or sales progression - it's the emotion.
Over more than 20 years of helping people move home, I've come to realise that every property has a story. Behind every front door is a lifetime of memories, and saying goodbye is often far harder than people ever expect.
Today, one of my lovely clients completed the sale of a home she had lived in for many years. It was where she raised her daughters, celebrated birthdays and Christmases, welcomed friends and family, and built a lifetime of memories.
Of course she felt sad, and do you know what? That's completely normal.
Selling A Home Is One Of Life's Biggest Emotional Milestones
People often assume moving house is simply a transaction, it isn't. It's closing one chapter before beginning another.
For many homeowners, selling means leaving behind the place where children took their first steps, where family photographs were taken on the stairs every Christmas morning, where grandchildren visited, where loved ones were cared for, or where they shared decades with a husband or wife.
You aren't just handing over keys, you're saying goodbye to part of your life.
The Part Of Estate Agency I Love Most
People often ask me what I enjoy most about my job. It's easy to assume the answer would be selling beautiful homes but it isn't! The part I genuinely love is helping people through one of the biggest changes in their lives. Sometimes that's celebrating exciting new beginnings, sometimes it's reassuring nervous first-time buyers, sometimes it's helping families navigate difficult decisions, and sometimes it's simply listening.
I've lost count of the number of cups of tea I've shared around kitchen tables, the hugs I've given on completion day, the tears I've wiped away, or the conversations that had very little to do with property at all. Because that's what people need... not just an estate agent...someone who genuinely cares.
You're Never Just Another Client
One of the reasons I chose to become an independent estate agent was because I wanted to offer something different.
When you instruct me, you deal with me from our very first meeting until the day I hand over the keys. There isn't a different person for valuations, another for viewings, someone else for negotiations and another for sales progression.
I'm there throughout
I'll answer the phone when you're worried
I'll celebrate when you receive an offer
I'll keep everyone talking when chains become stressful
I'll explain what's happening when things become confusing
And if completion day feels emotional, I'll completely understand why
Holding Your Hand Every Step Of The Way
Buying or selling a home can be exciting, stressful, overwhelming and emotional—sometimes all in the same day.
Having someone beside you who understands that makes all the difference. For me, estate agency has never simply been about selling houses.
It's about people
It's about listening
It's about supporting families through change
It's about celebrating new beginnings while recognising that endings can be incredibly emotional too
If you need someone to hold your hand through the process, reassure you when things feel uncertain, give you an honest opinion, a hug when it's needed, or simply be there from start to finish, that's exactly what I'm here for - because helping people move home isn't just my job, it's the part I love most.
If you're thinking about moving in Marlborough, Devizes or the surrounding Wiltshire villages and would like someone who understands that moving home is about far more than property, I'd love to help.
