The Best Areas to Buy a Family Home in Weymouth

Weymouth has long been one of Dorset's most sought-after places to live, and it's not hard to see why. A stunning harbour, miles of sandy beach, a friendly community feel, and far more affordable property prices than many comparable coastal towns make it a genuinely compelling choice for families.
But Weymouth is a town of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own character. If you're planning a move here, here's my guide to where to look, based on 18 years of working in this market.
Wyke Regis - The Family Favourite
Ask local families where they'd choose to put down roots in Weymouth, and Wyke Regis comes up time and again. Positioned on the peninsula between Weymouth and the Fleet lagoon, it offers a genuine village feel within easy reach of the town centre.
The area has a good mix of property types, from 1930s semis to larger detached homes, and is particularly popular with families thanks to its primary school and proximity to Budmouth Academy. It's also wonderfully well-placed for the Chesil Beach and Portland Harbour.
Expect to pay a slight premium over the Weymouth average, but the demand here is consistent and values hold well.
Preston and Overcombe - Coastal Living at Its Best
For families who want to wake up close to the sea without paying the full coastal premium, Preston is worth serious consideration. Situated to the east of Weymouth, it borders the stunning Bowleaze Coveway and offers easy access to quieter stretches of beach away from the summer crowds.
Preston has a good range of family housing, from post-war semis to larger executive homes, and benefits from a well-regarded primary school. It's the kind of area where people move once and stay for decades.
Chickerell - Space, Value and a Real Community
Chickerell sits just outside Weymouth proper, and that slight distance from the centre is precisely what makes it attractive to families. You get noticeably more space for your money, a proper village with a strong local community, and easy access into Weymouth via the B3157.
The town has seen steady growth over the past decade, with a mix of newer developments alongside older village housing stock. It's particularly well-suited to families with young children, with a popular primary school and a relaxed, semi-rural atmosphere.
Average prices here tend to run slightly above the wider Weymouth average, a reflection of the demand from buyers seeking more space.
Radipole - Affordable, Convenient and Underrated
Radipole often gets overlooked in favour of its more obviously attractive neighbours, but for first-time buying families or those with a tighter budget, it deserves a closer look. Well-served by local amenities, with good road links and easy access to Weymouth town centre, it offers solid value.
The RSPB Radipole Lake nature reserve is on the doorstep a proper slice of tranquility that's easy to take for granted when you live alongside it, but a genuine quality-of-life asset.
Upwey and Broadwey - Village Life Close to the Town
If your vision of the ideal family home involves a village setting, footpaths to the countryside, and a proper community feel without being isolated then Upwey and Broadwey are worth exploring. These quiet villages sit just north of Weymouth on the edge of the Dorset AONB, with direct rail connections into Weymouth and Dorchester.
Property here tends to include older character homes alongside more recent development. It's a slightly different market to central Weymouth more peaceful, more rural but the commuter convenience keeps demand strong.
My Advice for Family Buyers in Weymouth
Whatever area you're drawn to, my advice is the same: don't rush, but don't hesitate when you find the right property. The family home market in Weymouth is competitive at the right price point, and well-presented homes in popular areas still move quickly.
Think carefully about schools (always check catchment areas before you fall in love with a house), transport links, and your realistic budget including moving costs. And get a local view someone who knows this market, not just a portal algorithm.
