Mere is a quintessential small English town located in the South West of Wiltshire and borders the neighbouring counties of Dorset and Somerset. The town sits beneath the South West Wiltshire Downs – much of which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mere has wonderful road links as it is adjacent to and easily accessed from the A303. The neighbouring town of Gillingham, just 5 miles away, has a mainline railway into London, Waterloo.

Much of the town dates back to the 17th century and is mostly constructed of local stone. In the heart of the village, you will find the Mere Clocktower – a picturesque structure believed to have been constructed in 1868 and very much a focal point of the town. Though not overly big in size, Mere has lots to offer by way of independent shops, pubs and cafes/tearooms. The charming high street is still very much full of life and offers plenty of retail for those everyday needs. The education box is ticked with a well-regarded primary school and the town has a popular football club as well as other community groups and clubs. Countryside walks are on the door step and is a short distance (by car) to the well renowned National Trust’s Stourhead House and Gardens.

Why we love Mere: ‘Though classified as a town, Mere very much has a vibrant village feel with pretty stone cottages, a handful of great pubs and amazing access to the open countryside. A particular favourite is a scenic walk around the local Stourhead Gardens or King Alfred’s Tower followed by a well-earned hearty breakfast at the Hillbrush Factory Café.
